Precipitated Silica

Precipitated silica is a synthetic, amorphous form of silicon dioxide produced through a controlled chemical reaction from silicate solutions. It appears as a fine, white, free-flowing powder with a high specific surface area and porous structure, which give it excellent adsorption, reinforcement, and thickening properties. Thanks to its purity, consistent particle size, and strong surface activity, precipitated silica is widely used as a functional additive in rubber, plastics, coatings, paints, inks, adhesives, and personal care products. It enhances mechanical strength, improves dispersion, and contributes to better processing and performance in a broad range of industrial applications.

Applications

Precipitated silica is a highly versatile material used across many industries because of its high surface area, porosity, and excellent reinforcing and rheological properties. Its main applications include:

• Rubber and elastomers. Precipitated silica can be used as a reinforcing filler in tires, hoses, seals, and rubber goods to improve tensile strength, abrasion resistance, elasticity, and heat resistance.
• Plastics and composites. It can be added to plastics to enhance mechanical strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability, while also improving surface finish and processability.
• Coatings, paints, and inks. Precipitated silica functions as a matting agent, anti-settling agent, and rheology modifier to control viscosity, improve flow, and provide uniform matte effects.
• Adhesives and sealants. Precipitated silica can act as a thickener and reinforcing agent, improving thixotropy, bonding strength, and sag resistance.
• Personal care and cosmetics. It can be used in toothpaste as an abrasive and thickener, and in cosmetics as an oil-absorbing, soft-focus, and texture-enhancing agent.
• Food and feed. Precipitated silica can serve as an anti-caking and free-flow agent in powdered foods and animal feed (in compliant grades).
• Paper and printing. Precipitated silica can be used in papermaking and printing to improve ink absorbency, print quality, and opacity in specialty paper and coatings.
• Agriculture and chemicals. In addition, it can be used as a carrier for pesticides and fertilizers, and as a catalyst support or adsorbent in chemical processes.
