Description | It is used to modify polyethylene and other polymers by grafting its vinyl groups onto the polymer backbone using free radical initiators such as peroxides. This provides polymers with pendant trimethoxysilyl groups that can be used as moisture-activated crosslinking sites by hydrolysis of alkoxy groups and then condensation of the resulting silanol. When the silane-grafted polyethylene reacts to form a cross-linked or vulcanized polyethylene, cross-linked bonds are formed with water. This technology is widely used worldwide in commercial applications for wire and cable insulation, pipes and other similar purposes. The basic reaction sequence is as follows: using a peroxide initiator, reacting (grafting) polyethylene with vinyltrimethoxysilane in an extruder. The grafted polyethylene is then formed into final products, such as cable jackets, wire insulation or pipes. The forming step is usually completed by a second extrusion, during which the catalyst for the moisture curing step is added. Finally, due to the hydrolysis and condensation of the silane, the formed article is exposed to moisture or hot water, and the condensation forms a crosslink through the formation of Si-O-Si bonds. |
